This passion for the club lead to Keegan stepping into his first managers job at St James’ Park in 1992 – who were once again struggling in the second division and looking at relegation. The following year Keegan had won the league and automatic promotion to the Premier League.
His first season in the top flight he guided Newcastle to 3rd and then 3rd again the year after.
Its was the 1995-1996 season, with the team wearing this shirt, that was Keegan’s finest hour at Newcastle and as a manager. Newcastle were running away with the league, 12 points clear and hammering Manchester United 5-0 with ease.
